Friday, July 20th 2012: Forts (evening) … then Finger Lickin’ Friday (late night)

TONIGHT’S SHOW ($8):

  • Between Kristin Flammio and Dave Arlington, Forts have a thrumming backing band and a throaty front girl (we’ll let you guess which is which) that’s not afraid to take on a Danzig cover live at Southpaw, and that’s all the cojones an outfit needs for us to recommend them.  If that’s not enough for you then we encourage you to listen here.
.
  • NYC’s A Devil’s Broadcast make our favorite kind of noodly indie rock, with arpeggiated guitars, piano chords and a clangy bass that all just meander up and down doing smart things with each other for a good minute and a half before drums or vocals come in— if they come in.  And then when they do, it’s catchy four track-flavored stuff the likes of Pinback meets Sebadoh.  To listen go here and click “play” on the media player at the bottom of the screen.
.
  • Margo in the USA is the alter-ego of Les Bicyclettes Blanches, a long-time collaboration between musicians Magnolia Santibanez (Paris) and Mackenzie Miller Parker (New York State). The songs stretch the aural landscape from Siouxsie-like French-language musings to swinging honkey tonk to some downright weird instrumentals, all the while packaged in a unique production style featuring simple beats, soundscape noises and tinny slap-back vocal reverb. A touch of Dead Can Dance here and there. Listen here.
  • The Flesh open.
