Saturday, July 14th 2012: Rebecca Keith’s Birthday Party feat. Freshkills

Who doesn’t like a good birthday party?  We here at The Grand Victory certainly do!  So we’re holding one tonight for Rebecca Keith, the voice of Butchers & Bakers.  With four bands and two DJs!  We’re going to celebrate as late as we’re legally allowed!

TONIGHT’S SHOW ($8):

  • The New Yorker says of Freshkills, “Taking its name from the vast old landfill in Staten Island, Freshkills, appropriately enough, injects a degree of trash rock into its post-punk hybrid. The band’s painstakingly constructed hooks put them at the top of the heap.” Vice Magazine says, “I love this band because they remind me of the way I thought of New York before I lived here. It’s hard-hitting and infectious, but the frantic desperation is always palpable. It’s dark in that way.” Listen here.
  • Clouder make perfect psychedelia for contemporary society.  At times they’re channeling Pulp, The Smiths or Suede.  Other times they whip out a Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd vibe (think “Interstellar Overdrive”).  They meander through asymmetrical movements like The Clientele, croon like The Walkmen, and evoke other musical eras like the Brian Jonestown Massacre.  Listen here.
.
  • Butchers & Bakers keep things on the spookier side.  Guitars cavort in atonal arenas, arpeggiating through the rafters while bass lines snake up and down and Rebecca Keith’s voice flows gracefully from trapeze to tight rope in the middle of it all.  Shades of The Cure meets Cocteau Twins.  Listen here.
  •  Jozeph, of the now-defunct Strange Rivals, will be performing as KRVI.

LATE NIGHT (no cover):

Once the show’s over we’ll open the doors to all for no cover and continue Rebecca’s birthday bash with two DJs:  Rachel Hass of The Roulettes will play for the first hour, then DJ HNY (Eleanor from Happy New Year) will finish out the night with a bang.

We’ll see you there!
