Wednesday, August 29th 2012: Descender

TONIGHT’S SHOW ($8):

  • Descender sound a lot like a 21st Century compliant post-hardcore band that was raised on metal and got dosed with a tab of AmRep… If you like Planes Mistaken For Stars or Git Some as much as you do Quicksand… [they] could be your aural trip to a brand new set of front teeth” (Jaded Scenester NYC).  Listen here.
.
  • Hailing from our fair city and featuring The Grand Victory’s own Rick Cimato on drums, Thinning The Herd is 90′s style sleazy slow metal.  Think downtempo Pantera, or blues-infused Sleep.  This trio is scorching and drowsy in equal measure.  Listen here.

.
  • Virginia two-piece Akris make slow sludgy bluesy noise that kind of sounds like Morphine mixed with a female-fronted Sleep.  Replete with saxophone (at least on the recordings).  All fuzzed-out bass and drums— no guitar to be found.  Listen here.

  • Reign of Zaius represent the best part of metal-influenced ’90s rock, channeling groups like Soundgarden and Helmet without sacrificing fiery riffwork or devil-horns rockmanship.  Listen here.
