Wednesday, July 18th 2012: We Spies … then DJ Yvo @ 11PM

TONIGHT’S SHOW ($8):

  • We Spies are 100% analog synths and vocals.  Their all-vintage instrumentation lend this duo a sixties-thriller-soundtrack feel that makes the reverb-drenched vocals sound like a flash forward to the eighties.  Definitely great music for a long drive alone at night.  Listen here.
.
.
  • What Model Citizens, previoiusly Spiro Agnew, are an ever-changing line up revolving around Frontman Alex Musto, who describes them as “noise-influenced synth rock.”  Phase-washed buzzy synths sweep behind jerky guitar lines and cut-up mid-to-down tempo electro beats, all punctuated with Musto’s Television-like post-punk yelps and croons.  Listen here.
.
  • Bedfellows make us think of late Joy Division and early New Order.  Even the tracks that feature the stoccato jangle of Smiths-like guitar chords remain firmly rooted in the new wave emotional space where every relationship is doomed, and oh God we’re in the most tragically unlucky of them all right now.  Listen here.
.
.
  • Gift Horse sound to us like a lo fi Pernice Brothers meets Big Star.  The instrumentation makes it Americana and the earnest vocals make it sensitive power pop.  Done expertly on both fronts.  We’d point you to a link where you could hear their music, but no such thing exists.  Seriously.  The only reason we know what they sound like is they emailed us MP3s.  So you’ll just have to trust us on this one.

LATE NIGHT (no cover):

DJ Yvo plays Brit pop, UK punk, post punk, glam rock & UK invasion. Into the wee hours, baby!
