Thursday, October 18th 2012: Runny / Netherlands / DON’T / ZZZ’s / Gentlemen / Cinema Cinema

7PM TONIGHT ($9):

  • Runny singer Lemon Cookie is a personal friend of ours, and we’re going to risk raising his ire by describing his band as a cross between Anal Cunt, Bloodhound Gang and the B-52s.  They are, after all, self-described as “Brooklyn’s best hardcore band.”  And they deliver such sage advice as “It’s the third dick you suck that makes you gay.”  Listen here.
.
  • Time Out New York says, The Netherlands do a kind of futuristic biker rock, featuring lurch-happy riffs and a singer who slathers his voice in weird effects. The trio’s live show is a fuzzed-out blast of anti-intellectual glee.”  Listen here.

  • DON’T“Aaron Lazar, ex-lead singer of metal surf outfit The Giraffes, is on guitar and vocals, and Mitchell King, ex-drummer of Beat The Devil, is on the skins. Bring earplugs, because despite being a two-piece this band is loud. King drives the songs with busy drumbeats that pair nicely with Lazar’s simple riffs, and Lazar’s vocal melodies are similar to his Giraffes style, but tinged with a kind of Buddy Holly twang” (Brooklyn Based).  Listen here.
  • ZZZ’s are a “no wave / experimental post punk trio,” according to their bio.  They feature two former members of Japanese all-girl act Hystoic Vein, and are similarly a Japanese all-girl act.  Furious angular noisy riffage with shouty girl vocals.  Listen here.

  • Gentlemen: If you ever drink at Union Pool then you probably know all three members (Dave, Frank and Taylor).  We know we do.  We saw them play The Grand Victory some months back and we loved it.  They play ear-splitting dark raging punk rock.  Check out this video for a sample of what you’re in for.

  • CMJ says of Cinema Cinema, “Pounding two piece…created a musical melting pot of sonic soundscapes, avant-pop, and good old-fashioned rock songs…an atmospheric journey into the art of sound…filled to the brim with floor-trembling drums, sleazy guitars, and gut-wrenching vocals that garner fist-pumping status…overall vibe is dingy and dark, evoking imagery of a New York City back alley in the early 70′s.” Listen here.
